Habitat for Humanity Global Village, Guatemala
Moye Consulting’s Mary Anne Perkowski participated in a Habitat for Humanity Global Village program in San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala, in November 2016. The 24-person Habitat team built latrines and smokeless stoves for six needy families. Guatemala faces many social problems and is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. The distribution of income is highly unequal with more than half of the population below the national poverty line. The recipients of Habitat’s efforts are families whose limited source of income comes from work on coffee plantations in the Western Highlands. The smokeless stoves burn wood more efficiently and eliminate unhealthy air in the families’ home. The stove, latrine, and water filter are part of a healthy home kit providing access to clean air, water, and basic sanitation.
