Fire Alarm System Replacement Kraft Heinz, Champaign, IL
The Kraft Heinz manufacturing plant in Champaign, Illinois, was originally constructed in 1963. The plant has grown to 1,200,000 SF in a facility nearly one-half mile long. Kraft Heinz procured a team of experts to assess current conditions, recommend improvements, and plan upgrades to critical security and life safety systems.
Moye Consulting was engaged to assess the condition of existing Fire Alarm and Fire Protection systems and recommend appropriate improvements. The assessment phase included consultations with the Kraft Heinz operations and facilities managers, discussing everything from documenting existing conditions through extensive field surveys. Information gathered determined the development of a Basis of Design for the replacement of the existing fire alarm system, which was nearing the end of it's useful life. Assessment of the fire sprinkler systems exposed the need to test a sample set of sprinklers in the facility that have been in service for more than 50 years which is a requirement of NFPA Standard No. 13. The assessment phase of the project also revealed the need to upgrade both fire pump assemblies with new automatic controllers and fuel tank level sensors.
The results of the fire alarm and fire protection assessments led to the preparation of bid documents for fire sprinkler testing, complete replacement of the existing fire alarm system with a new state-of-the-art intelligent addressable system, and replacement of the fire pump controllers.
